Stowaway

Stowaway, 12" x 12", acrylic on board

Paintings can often be painfully slow. This piece is new but it's been around for a long time rattling in my head. I started this piece about 1.5 years ago and I only recently figured out how to finish it. I have to have a certain amount of mental distance from the start and the end of the work. I can't really give works a time limit even if I want to. There is a sister piece to Stowaway, which I worked at the same time. I'll be posting it soon. ;)

Making a screenprint

These are the 5 hand drawn films created before I could begin printing at Spudnik Press.

You can see in the left corner that I brought one of my original paintings for color reference while mixing the colors.

Spudnik class and member screens

To start I coated 2 screens with emulsion.

I use the transparent films to burn an image on the screen.

washing out the image

Printing the first color yellow.

The yellow was to transparent so I ended up having to print the yellow twice. I don't print on black paper often and if I did it again I would do it differently.

Printing Red for the second color.

Engagement Commission

ink, and colored pencil on paper, 2012, artwork 10" x 8",  framed 14 3/4" x 10 5/8"

I was commissioned to create this painting as a surprise gift to celebrate two lovebirds moving in together.  She really liked one of my daily drawing series and wanted me to make a special piece combining her favorite color green with his blue.  While she was talking to me about making this piece for their new place, he was ring shopping and getting ready to propose.  They didn't know what each other was up to and this really shows that they are on the same wavelength.  I was so thrilled to be able participate in this special life event.  This is such a great story and it warms my heart completely.  I'm delighted for this special Denver couple as they begin their new life together.    Listen up folks as this is a great idea and I wish that I thought of it back when I got engaged.  I think that all major life events should be celebrated properly with a work of art.  These are the moments that make being an artist really great.
